The Center for the Education of Women currently has two programs that provide funds to University of Michigan faculty members engaged in gender-focused research.

Riecker Undergraduate Research Fund

The Center for the Education of Women announces the Riecker Undergraduate Research Fund.  The intent of this fund is to enable faculty members from any discipline to involve undergraduate University of Michigan-Ann Arbor students in research projects pertaining to gender issues.

A faculty member may apply for up to $2,000 to pay the wages of an undergraduate student as part of his/her research team.  To do so, the faculty member sends a one- to two-page memo to CEW staff member Jean Waltman (jwaltman@umich.edu), briefly describing—

The nature of the research project and its gender focus

The project time period

The role the undergraduate student would play in the project; and the ways in which the faculty member would mentor the student

The number of hours the student will work, the rate per hour, and the total amount of money being requested

There is no deadline for applications.  Simply send the memo, or inquiries about the fund, to Dr. Jean Waltman jwaltman@umich.edu  734.764.6575

Faculty Research Grants

The Center for the Education of Women is dedicated to promoting scholarship and creative activity that explores and expands knowledge about women’s leadership.  We therefore announce the availability of Faculty Research Grants of up to $7,500 to fund research or creative activity in any field that is related to leadership and women or gender.  We particularly seek projects that explore women’s leadership in the following sectors:  higher education, electoral politics, business, government, not-for-profit and grass-root organizations.  Awards are subject to the availability of funds.

Tenured, tenure-track, non tenure-track and clinical faculty as well as research scientists are eligible to apply.  Grants may be used to meet the costs of the project (e.g. travel to research sites, purchase of research materials, data acquisition, or research assistance).  CEW funds may not be used to provide a stipend or salary for faculty or postdoctoral personnel, purchase durable capital equipment, or provide tuition support.  Grants will be supported in part by the Jean Campbell Research Fund.

An applicant who plans to hire an undergraduate research assistant to work on the project may be eligible for an additional grant of up to $1,000 from CEW’s Riecker Undergraduate Research Fund (see above).  If you wish to apply for the Riecker funds, please note this in the budget summary and justification.

Successful applicants will be invited to offer a brown bag presentation of their work at CEW and/or to publish it as a CEW Occasional Paper.

Applications may be submitted to CEW at any time.  Awards will be made quarterly.

Faculty members in relevant fields and CEW administrators will review applications, evaluating them for

The quality and significance of the project

The extent to which the project illuminates women’s experiences as leaders

The likelihood that the project will contribute new knowledge or improvements in practice.
