The Center for the Education of Women administers two staff leadership development programs - the Advanced Leadership Seminar (ALS) and the Focus on Leadership (FOL) Seminar. CEW believes that the Advanced Leadership Seminar and the Focus on Leadership Seminar are distinct and effective models for enhancing the skills of a key set of managers, and for preparing the next generation of administrative leaders to continue the University’s tradition of excellence.
CEW receives support for the ALS and FOL programs from the Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the University Human Resources office, the UM Health System Human Resources Department and the Office of the Vice President and Secretary. Please contact CEW by phone at 734-764-6005 or via email at ALSadmin@umich.edu for more information about these leadership development programs.
CEW accepts nominations for the Advanced Leadership Seminar during the months of June and July, and staff selected for the program are notified in August. Participants will experience a unique opportunity to further develop their leadership skills through presentations by executive and senior-level University administrators, active participation in focused discussions on organizational development that are supplemented by assigned readings and small group discussion, and the creation of an independent project that must engage the principles of leadership and systems change management. Participants will also receive individual and group consultation and support during the independent project phase. Get the leadership application packet.

CEW also offers a one-day leadership development training session for UM staff, the Focus on Leadership (FOL) seminar. This one-day training includes presentations on University Organization and Culture, Leadership Vision and Values, and Intercultural Communication; an overview of the ALS selection process and tips on how to develop a more competitive application; and a networking lunch to give participants an opportunity to connect with staff from other University units and departments.
Priority is given to those applicants who were not selected for the ALS program. If additional spaces are available, they will be opened up to those persons who have expressed an interest in this leadership development training opportunity.
CEW sponsors a number of voluntary professional development networks. The Women of Color in the Academy Project for faculty women is designed to increase the awareness on campus of the contributions of women of color faculty while promoting social and professional interaction. The WOCAP video, “Through My Lens,” provides insights on how to increase retention and improve the climate for women of color faculty. WOCAP is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2004.
The Junior Women Faculty Network helps tenure-track women connect with their women colleagues all across campus and to learn effective strategies for their career success.
The Women of Color Task Force, founded in 1979, moved to CEW in 2002. The Task Force conference is the largest professional development activity on campus each year. In addition, it sponsors Women of the Year awards highlighting the contributions of women of color staff at the University, as well as various professional development and mentoring activities.
