CEW Scholarships

The scholarship application process begins in October 2009 and the due date for applications is January 29, 2010. You may download the pdf of the application, or you may pick up a hard copy of the application at our office at 330 East Liberty, Ann Arbor. Please read through the general requirements below to see if you are eligible for one of the CEW scholarships.

Eligibility Requirements for CEW Scholarships:

Must be attending the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Flint, Dearborn Campuses) in the academic year of 2010-2011.
Must have experienced a lapse in education after graduating from high school of at least (a) 48 consecutive months or (b) 48 non-consecutive months –not counting interruptions of less than 8 months.
Applicants who have received a CEW Scholarship in the past are not eligible.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:

Eligibility includes undergraduate, graduate, professional levels and full-time or part-time students.
Interruptions may have occurred at any time after High School graduation and prior to Fall Term, 2010. This means if you are currently attending UM and had an interruption ten years ago–you are eligible.
You do not have to be admitted at the time you submit the application, however you must be admitted to UM by April 1, 2010 or application will not be forwarded to the Final Selection Committee.
When you apply, you are applying for over 35 CEW scholarships, some scholarships may have specific criteria or specific eligibility requirements. The Scholarship Award Committee will match awardees with the Scholarship that fits the appropriate criteria.

What is the CEW Scholarship Program?

The CEW Scholarship Program for returning women students was established in 1970 to honor the academic performance and potential of women whose education has been interrupted and to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the admission of women to the University of Michigan. Thanks to the generosity of individuals and foundations, CEW has awarded over 1100 scholarships since 1970. CEW Scholarship Awards are invaluable, since they often mean the difference between completing a degree or not doing so for many students at the University of Michigan. Due to the generosity of donors, CEW was able to expand the program in 2008 to include additional scholarships for male and female students on the Ann Arbor campus.

AWARDS
Approximately 40 Scholarships are awarded annually ranging from about $1,000 to $8,000, with some larger scholarship awards given.

This paper compares the volunteer activities of women who received CEW Scholarships with national data on the volunteer activities of women. CEW scholars volunteer at a rate nearly twice that of the national average, and their motivations were predominantly altruistic. Based on a survey of past scholars, the paper also discusses the impact of the scholarships on these women.
