CEW+ is sponsoring a series of classic films at the Michigan Theater by some of Hollywood’s most influential women. This series aims to feature women who broke down barriers to diversity and equity in early Hollywood, clearing the path for those who followed.
During Hollywood’s Golden Age of Film female actors, directors, and production staff had to fight against mainstream traditional gender roles while working within the studio system. Women in Hollywood had to tread carefully to be able to advocate for their rights while avoiding being branded “difficult”, a moniker that could end a career. While often imperfect, each movie in this series has something interesting to say about gender, race, and sexuality.
All About Eve (1950) 2 hr 18 min
All About Eve is heralded as one of the greatest films of all time and features a strong group of female characters at its center. As the only film in Oscar history to receive four female acting nominations, this film features some incredibly moving performances from its stars. Bette Davis and Anne Baxter’s characters spar with each other to win the spotlight in a conflict between the seasoned star and the ambitious young actress.
Bette Davis was known as one of the movie industry’s most outspoken advocates on matters of race in the 1930’s and 40’s. Labeled difficult by the studios, Davis pursued fair compensation for herself and was publicly indignant over unfairness on and off screen.
