2016 CEW Mullin Welch Lecture Series Presents
“Personal Lessons in Entrepreneurship: Strategies for Women Entrepreneurs” featuring Florine Mark, President & CEO of Weight Watchers Group, Inc.

CEW is pleased to welcome Florine Mark, founder of Weight Watchers Group, Inc., to speak and to anchor a lively, multigenerational conversation about women’s experience in entrepreneurship and business. The 2016 CEW Mullin Welch Lecture will take place on March 29, 2016 at the Michigan Union Rogel Ballroom at 5:00 pm

Joining Ms. Mark to amplify the conversation will be two women who began their own companies in successive generations. They include Tanya Allen, who founded ForeverFresh in 1989, maker of a cross-over disposable incontinence undergarment for both women and men, and Amy Cell, who established her talent and recruiting firm, Amy Cell, LLC, just last year. Ms. Allen is also president of the Greater Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, and she also brings special perspective as an African American entrepreneur. Ms. Cell, prior to starting her firm, was a Talent Enhancement executive at the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and at Ann Arbor Spark.

Florine Mark is a Detroit native and President & CEO of Weight Watchers Group, Inc. in Farmington Hills, Michigan. Ms. Mark was the first woman to be inducted in the National Management Association’s Hall of Fame, and was honored with the Entrepreneurial Visionary Award from the Women’s Business Center in Washington, D.C. Ms. Mark is the heart and soul of Weight Watchers Group, Inc., but also devotes much time and energy to policy-making boards that set the bar for health and wellness issues in her home state of Michigan. She is committed to improving Michigan residents’ health, and regularly encourages state and business leaders to join the effort. She is passionate about her work and involvement in numerous Jewish organizations, always seeking to advance the community in any way she can.

 

 

Prior to the panel discussion, CEW will award the 2016 Carol Hollenshead Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity and Social Change. This award was created in recognition of the accomplishments and institutional change realized through the efforts of former director, Carol Hollenshead, during her 20-year tenure at CEW. Honorees are staff and faculty who, like Carol, have proven that social change is possible through persistent hard work and realize that one person can make a lasting difference. This year’s recipients are Lola Eniola-Adefeso, PhD, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, College of Engineering, and Jack Bernard, JD, Associate General Counsel and Intermittent Lecturer in Law, Law School and Adjunct Lecturer, Gerald R Ford School of Public Policy.

The CEW Mullin Welch Series was established in 1989 by Frances Daseler and Marjorie Jackson in memory of their sister Elizabeth Charlotte Mullin Welch. This fund brings to campus outstanding women who exemplify Elizabeth’s characteristics: creativity, strength of character and expansive vision.
