The U-M Women of Color Task Force (WCTF) will host its 35th annual Career Conference on Friday, March 3, 2017. The featured keynote speakers are Jane Elliott, anti-racism activist and educator, and Roland S. Martin, host and managing editor of News One Now, who will discuss “Race, Gender & Identity in the Workplace.” U-M professor Robin Means Coleman will serve as moderator.

The opening keynote address will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. in Hill Auditorium. The keynote is free and open to the public, however registration is requested for those who are not planning to attend the 1-day WCTF conference. Jane Elliott has taught her “Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes” groundbreaking anti-racist group social exercise for over 36 years, working to make people more empathetic to racism. Starting the exercise in her third-grade classroom in all-white, all-Christian Riceville, Iowa, immediately after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this exercise has provided dramatic results for both children and adults throughout the country. Elliott’s work has also been the subject of several television documentaries, written up in many psychology and social studies texts, and a book, A Class Divided, Then and Now. Elliott is a recipient of the National Mental Health Association Award for Excellence in Education. She has been a guest lecturer who has appeared on many television shows, including 60 Minutes, Oprah and Today.

Roland S. Martin is a journalist who is the host and managing editor of TV One’s News One Now, the first daily morning news program in history to focus on news and analysis of politics, entertainment, sports and culture from an explicitly African American perspective. Martin is also the creator and host of The Roland Martin Show, as well as senior analyst for the Tom Joyner Morning Show. Honored with the 2013 National Association of Black Journalists’ (NABJ) Journalist of the Year Award, Martin is a two-time winner of the NAACP Image Award and has received more than 40 professional media awards. Spending six years as a CNN contributor, he was granted the Peabody Award in 2009.

Conference attendees may choose from 20 workshop sessions designed to support their professional and personal development. New this year, both keynote speakers will conduct workshop sessions and hold a book signing event. The conference is open to U-M personnel (staff, faculty, and students), as well as to the general public.
