Alice Walker delivered the 2014 Zora Neale Hurston lecture to a capacity crowd at Hill Auditorium Wednesday night, November 5, 2014. Her overall message was one of friendship and peace; between people as well as between countries. Best known as the Pulitzer-Prize and National Book award winning author of the novel, The Color Purple, Walker is also a poet and a social justice activist. In talking about her activism on behalf of the Palestinian people, she urged the audience to educate themselves beyond what is readily available. She went on to say that there was something about that situation that was crucial for the world to understand. And that until we did, we might not make it as a world.

The 20th Annual Zora Neale Hurson Lecture was co-sponsored by the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies and the Center for the Education of Women. This was the concluding event in the year-long celebration of CEW’s 50th Anniversary.
