The Center for the Education of Women (CEW) has named its graduate-level Counseling Internship Program The Constance M. Kinnear Counseling Internship Program to recognize the foundational support of CEW’s longtime friend and advocate, Connie Kinnear.

In 2011, Connie , along with her husband Tom Kinnear, initiated a Community Counseling endowment, securing CEW’s ability to provide counseling services to non-UM affiliated members of the Ann Arbor community. This leadership gift also catalyzed the support of numerous other donors, and Connie has committed to further support through the Victors for Michigan campaign.

Putting the Center’s Community Counseling on firm, sustainable footing significantly increases the value and capacity of CEW’s counseling internship program—thus inspiring CEW to name the program after Connie Kinnear. The community population makes up approximately half of CEW’s counseling clientele.

The Constance M. Kinnear Counseling Internship Program is offered in conjunction with the U-M School of Social Work’s MSW program, for which CEW has become an important fieldwork site. Under the supervision of the Center’s Licensed Master Social Workers, interns learn to translate their classroom knowledge to CEW’s individual counseling services, which focus on career and educational growth.

After careful training and evaluation, interns are able to offer counseling appointments of their own. This hands-on experience provides MSW students with the resources and support necessary to ensure they are fully prepared to provide excellent counseling services upon completion of their degrees.

We thank Connie for finding a way to provide benefit for students, CEW, the University, and the larger community.”
