Anna K. Wood

Anna argues for the necessity of engaging men in positive, constructive dialogues about masculine socialization to foster more effective prevention strategies.

Anna K. Wood is a dual PhD candidate in social work and sociology who is fueled by personal experience to prevent gender-based violence. Anna writes that her “dissertation project looks at masculine socialization processes, with particular attention to how men are socialized through, with, and alongside violence,” in particular within male-dominated groups such as fraternities and athletic teams, challenging traditional advocacy approaches that often position men solely as contributors to the problem. Anna argues for the necessity of engaging men in positive, constructive dialogues about masculine socialization to foster more effective prevention strategies. Her ongoing research focuses on a fraternity that was socially boycotted following a Title IX case, with her CEW+ Fellowship supporting this critical work. Anna’s advisor lauds her for combining “academic rigor, practical expertise, and unwavering commitment to eradicating gender-based violence.”

Beyond her dissertation, Anna has expanded her advocacy efforts through various roles, including serving as a program coordinator and peer facilitator at U-M’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center. She also collaborated with the Michigan Men program to conduct a comprehensive survey on men’s experiences with intimacy and risk in their closest friendships. A strong advocate for education, Anna takes pride in mentoring and teaching undergraduates, several of whom have pursued careers in gender-based violence prevention after graduation. While in graduate school, Anna has contributed to her fields through peer-reviewed publications and active involvement in academic and community service. Anna’s writing has also appeared in The Atlantic, Current Affairs, and Public Seminar.

Originally from New England, Anna has called Michigan home for the past ten years, where she lives with her partner Robert, their son Arlo, and their animals. Arlo, whom Anna describes as “the brightest light” in their lives, continues to inspire her as she advances in her studies and advocacy work.

CEW+ congratulates Anna on her academic success and names her the Gutsy Broad Fellow and Collegiate Sorosis Scholar.
