CEW+ recognizes Carter’s dedication to a sustainable, equitable future and names her a Margaret Dow Towsley Scholar.

Carter Purcell is an advocate for sustainability, social justice, and environmental stewardship. With a background that spans the arts, nonprofit sector, and climate-focused ventures, Carter has consistently pursued careers that drive meaningful impact. Currently, she is completing a dual Master of Business Administration and Master of Science at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business and School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS).

Previously, Carter earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Columbia University. After graduation, Carter worked for seven years in nonprofit services, government consulting, and sustainable agriculture. At The Cadmus Group, she enhanced digital engagement strategies for federal agencies, significantly boosting web visitors and social media engagement. At Field to Market, a sustainable agriculture alliance, she developed member engagement strategies, led DEI initiatives, and supported a successful $70 million USDA Climate-Smart Partnership grant proposal. Her work here also included increasing media engagement and growing attendance at the Sustainable Agriculture Summit.

At the Ross School of Business, Carter has led efforts on further integrating DEI into the core curriculum as a member of the Ross DEI Committee. She also serves as a climate investment lead on the Social Venture Fund, where she evaluates and invests in intersectional climate and health startups. Her dedication to a greener future extends to her concentration in environmental justice at SEAS, underscoring her commitment to creating equitable and sustainable solutions. Carter has recently completed her second summer as an Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps Fellow. In this role, she has worked with Chubb Insurance that focuses on increasing climate resiliency for American farmers, following a successful project with PepsiCo in summer 2023 to invest in sustainability within their agricultural supply chain.
