Charlotte looks forward to combining her dedication to person-centered care with her expertise in public health.

Charlotte Jackson is currently a medical student at the University of Michigan, planning to specialize in general surgery. Charlotte received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard in 2016, majoring in evolutionary biology with an initial dream to become a marine biologist. After dissecting too many clams, she decided she’d rather work with people. She then earned a master’s degree in medical sciences at Brown University, where she discovered her passion for civic engagement and public health. Charlotte subsequently worked on political campaigns before joining the Rhode Island Executive Office of Health and Human Services. There, she directed a program aimed at expanding provider capacity for behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment across the state. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she played a crucial role in the state’s response efforts.

Now in medical school, Charlotte has continued to use her public health background. She has served as the president of the American Medical Association chapter, where she authored and testified for policy resolutions, including expanding accommodations for lactating students and abolishing co-payments for incarcerated patients. Charlotte also led the pre-matriculation backpacking trip for incoming medical students, reflecting her love for the outdoors and commitment to building community. She is also a board member of the First in Family group, where she works to recruit and support first-generation college graduates from lower-income families like herself.

Charlotte became a mother during her third year of medical school. While it has been challenging navigating time-consuming clinical rotations with a new baby, this experience has only underscored her passion for medicine and patient advocacy. As she prepares for residency, Charlotte looks forward to combining her dedication to person-centered care with her expertise in public health.
