Gloria Charles Mazinga

Gloria’s clinical work addresses the need for accessible healthcare solutions for managing chronic disease in resource-limited settings.

Gloria Charles Mazinga is a master’s student in clinical nutrition at the University of Michigan, specializing in clinical nutrition and dietetics. She previously earned a certificate in global health from the University of Malawi and a bachelor’s degree in food, nutrition, and dietetics from the University of Eastern Africa, Baraton. At 19 years old, Gloria became the youngest registered dietitian in Malawi, her home country. She had enrolled in university at age 14, inspired by her parents use of therapeutic diets to manage her Crohn’s disease when medications proved ineffective.

Gloria’s clinical work addresses the need for accessible healthcare solutions for managing chronic disease in resource-limited settings. Her experience includes developing nutrition guidelines and care plans for managing chronic diseases at Kamuzu Central Hospital, creating oncology nutrition protocols at Malawi National Cancer Center, and caring for pediatric cancer patients at Baylor College of Medicine’s clinic in Lilongwe.

Her service record includes projects across Kenya with the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Linda Mama Project, Shoe4Africa Project, and Rafiki Adolescent Health Project. She continues community nutrition work through the Youth in Missions Organization while on study leave. In the U.S., Gloria continues her volunteer work with the AMEN Free Clinic and the Refugee Garden Initiative in Ann Arbor.

Gloria participates in research updating critical care nutrition protocols with Michigan Medicine’s neurocritical care team. She is also co-authoring studies on pediatric cancer patients in Malawi and has conducted independent research on HIV/AIDS nutrition in Kenya.

Gloria serves as co-president of the African Graduate Student Association and as a student admissions ambassador for the School of Public Health (SPH). She has helped her peers secure over $40,000 in combined scholarships. She is also a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s International Global Scholar Award and the SPH Nutrition Scholarship.

CEW+ recognizes Gloria as a visionary public health leader and names her an Irma M. Wyman Scholar.
