Han envisions using computer science as a tool to build inclusive communities and solve real-world problems.

Han Zhang is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science at the University of Michigan. Her academic excellence is reflected in her impressive 3.95 GPA and numerous honors, including the James B. Angell Scholarship, Weinback Family Dream Big Scholarship, and Branstrom Freshman Prize. She is also a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and the Engineering Honors Program.

Han is an advocate for fellow women in STEM. As a young girl, Han experienced isolation while navigating language barriers and cultural differences at school. Her memory of feeling invisible motivates her lifelong commitment to ensuring other women feel seen and supported. In high school, Han founded a Girls Who Code club for grade schoolers, introducing thirty young girls to computer science fundamentals.

She remains a committed advocate to this day. As membership officer for Girls in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Han matches over 60 members into mentorship families and coordinates event logistics in collaboration with organizations like Adobe Ambassadors and Michigan Hackers. Han has served as a peer mentor and is now a residential advisor in the Women in Science and Engineering Residential Program, which recognized her as the 2024-2025 Student Leader of the Year for her role in shaping a supportive community for female STEM students. For the Kids Who Code program, Han has taught students programming topics ranging from web development and machine learning to Arduino and iOS development. She will also be in the Google Community Leaders Program in 2025-2026.

In her career beyond graduation, Han envisions using computer science as a tool to build inclusive communities and solve real-world problems. In 2024, Han collaborated with HERE Technologies on the Roundabout Finder project analyzing geospatial data to detect roundabout patterns. She has also gained industry experience as a front-end developer with Innovation for Impact.

CEW+ honors Han’s excellence in engineering and names her an Irma M. Wyman Scholar.
