Karly Miller
“I am determined to go above and beyond to encourage my future patients to look forward to meeting with a dietitian.”
Karly Miller is a dedicated student and community leader pursuing a master’s degree in nutritional sciences at UM-Ann Arbor. Karly is passionate about improving people’s lives through nutrition. Karly says, “The future of nutrition is tailoring it to each patient’s specific needs. It can improve the quality of life in individuals, communities, and potentially at a global scale. I am determined to go above and beyond to encourage my future patients to look forward to meeting with a dietitian.”
Currently, Karly is conducting research at U-M with Dr. Suzanna Zick to investigate the association between dietary intake and CIPN development in survivors of cancer post-neurotoxic chemotherapy. Her mentor describes her as “an enthusiastic, engaged, passionate, and extremely proactive student.” Karly is also a highly-regarded student leader as she is the president of the Nutritional Sciences Student Association. In this position, Karly intends to connect with community leaders and students to bridge the knowledge gap in the nutrition fields and increase involvement with food banks and pantries.
Karly is already recognized as a “natural leader who listens to her peers and takes action.” She led an initiative in her first semester to survey all first-year students about changes to the department’s curriculum; as a result of her actions, the department’s curriculum committee was able to implement changes sooner to benefit the fall 2024 cohort. Beyond these initiatives and commitments, Karly is also a member of the Public Health Student Assembly and worked with Michigan Medicine as a Research Assistant to recruit survivors of lymphoma for a study looking at dietary intake and fatigue levels.
CEW+ celebrates Karly’s committed community leadership, as well as her vision for her career as a dietitian, and names her an Irma M. Wyman Scholar.
