Kyle’s career and life are guided by one purpose: to create a healthcare system that is accessible, inclusive, and rooted in dignity for all.

Kyle W. Homer is pursuing an MD degree at the University of Michigan Medical School where his vision is to become an ASL-fluent family physician dedicated to improving healthcare for people with disabilities, especially those with hearing loss. Kyle’s journey as both a Deaf individual and a parent to two young daughters with hearing loss has shaped his lifelong commitment to advocacy, resilience, and equity.

Kyle began to lose his hearing at age four due to a genetic syndrome and became Deaf by age seven. Navigating life with cochlear implants required adaptability and determination, qualities that have guided him in school, career, and family. As an undergraduate at BYU, Kyle tutored peers and founded a mentorship program that continues to support students with disabilities today. Later, while completing a Master of Healthcare Administration, his capstone focused on improving care for Deaf patients at Michigan Medicine — a proposal he will soon present to Michigan Medicine.

Now in medical school, Kyle combines personal experience with professional training to create systemic change. Through the MDisability program, he co-authored an article on accommodating patients with disabilities in healthcare. He is also developing a student club to teach medical students how to better serve patients with hearing loss, with the goal of incorporating this into the medical curriculum. His long-term plan includes building community partnerships with Deaf organizations and advancing policy reforms to expand health equity.

Beyond Kyle’s academic and advocacy work, his most important role is as a father. He teaches his daughters the values of self-advocacy, resilience, and compassion — showing them that disability is not a limitation but a source of strength.
