Lauren aims to create safe, supportive spaces for survivors, improve services for single mothers, and contribute to global conversations on domestic violence prevention and equity in social services.

Lauren Verardi is pursuing a master of social work at U-M Ann Arbor, where she studies trauma-informed care, policy reform, and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence. Her journey into social work is deeply personal, rooted in her lived experience as a single mother of three and a survivor of domestic violence. These challenges not only shaped her educational path but also fueled her determination to become an advocate for survivors and to dismantle the systemic barriers that perpetuate cycles of abuse.

As the primary caregiver to her children, ages 11, 7, and 5, Lauren balances the demands of motherhood, education, and community engagement with resilience and determination. Her academic journey, which was interrupted for a decade, reflects her persistence and unwavering commitment to creating a stable future for her family while pursuing her passion for social justice.

Lauren’s advocacy is grounded in action. She has volunteered at local shelters, participated in survivor support groups, and engaged in community service to better understand the complexities survivors face. These experiences reinforced the urgent need for trauma-informed, culturally competent interventions and highlighted the importance of structural change through policy advocacy.

Through the MSW program, Lauren is developing the skills and knowledge to transform her lived experience into professional expertise. Her vision is to become a licensed social worker specializing in trauma-informed care, working directly with survivors while influencing community programs and policy reform. She aims to create safe, supportive spaces for survivors, improve services for single mothers, and contribute to global conversations on domestic violence prevention and equity in social services.

For Lauren, this degree is not simply an academic pursuit — it is a continuation of her mission to empower survivors, advocate for systemic change, and build a more inclusive and compassionate society.
