Michelle is determined to work with people experiencing health issues or disabilities that prevent them from accessing basic care.

Michelle Thurmond is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Services at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where she maintains placement on both the honor roll and dean’s list. Previously, Michelle earned her associate’s degree in business and general studies from Wayne County Community College in 2024. Her long-term goal is to apply to the Master of Social Work program at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor to become a licensed social worker and social justice entrepreneur.

As a breast cancer survivor and kidney transplant recipient, Michelle has experienced firsthand the healthcare disparities and access challenges that affect marginalized communities. These experiences did not deter her but fueled her passion for advocacy. Michelle is determined to work with people experiencing health issues or disabilities that prevent them from accessing basic care. Michelle is also the primary caregiver for her adopted daughter. She became the child’s guardian while completing her final day of chemotherapy, demonstrating extraordinary strength and commitment to family. Michelle deftly balances her newfound parenting duties with her academics and commitment to serving her community through volunteer work.

After graduating in 2027, Michelle plans to apply her knowledge to improving her community. She intends to establish a nonprofit organization called The New Beginnings and Advocacy Network, which will support women through mentorship, job training, mental health support, and education. Her goal is to create safe, supportive spaces where women can access resources designed with a deep understanding of trauma, poetry, and systemic barriers.

Michelle’s commitment to community service is evident in her history of volunteer work with Wayne County Community College’s TRIO program, which strives to help students succeed in college. Michelle spoke to current and prospective students about her education journey. Her openness about her challenges serves as an inspiration for students facing similar obstacles.
