Pedro Pazmino is a master’s student in information science at the University of Michigan, specializing in human-computer interaction with a focus on user experience (UX) research and design. He believes emerging technologies like virtual reality and artificial intelligence signal a new paradigm, offering opportunities to improve people’s lives and enhance business productivity through meaningful and efficient user experiences.

Pedro’s path to U-M is marked by continuous learning. After completing an undergraduate degree in graphic design, Pedro started a career in advertising in his home country of Ecuador. He leveraged a network built through freelance projects to transition to a software development firm. Though he didn’t have formal training in user experience design, he engaged in daily, empirical learning to gain the skills needed and embarked on a fruitful career at the company for over seven years.

As a parenting student, Pedro is a caring father to his three-year-old son and recognizes his wife as his greatest source of support. Pedro views investment in his education as a step toward greater stability for his family and greater clarity of focus on the contributions he can make as an information professional. Juggling two part-time jobs, full-time coursework, and serving as president and co-founder of FLUX, a knowledge-sharing group for UX design professionals, Pedro also volunteers in the lab of Dr. Lorraine Buis, working at the intersection of behavioral health interventions and health information technology. Pedro’s contributions to the research team are described as “essential” and “vital to the progress” the lab has made. He is further lauded as a humble and efficient collaborator who is “compassionate, service-oriented, and dependable.” Pedro’s commitment to providing for his family is matched by his passion for exploring ways in which technology and information can produce advancement in industries like healthcare and human capital management.
