Victor Ogobi

CEW+ applauds Victor’s persistence in his education and names him an Irma M. Wyman Scholar.

Victor Ogobi is a tenacious learner and rising data scientist who has continuously persisted in his education. Though circumstances prevented Victor from attending university for several years, he never lost sight of his goal and ultimately earned admittance to the University of Ibadan. There he excelled, even in the face of significant illness and loss in his family, and graduated in the top five percent of his class with a bachelor’s degree in industrial and production engineering.

In the years following his graduation, Victor worked various jobs while caring full-time for his brother and seeking new opportunities for academic and professional growth. With characteristic drive and determination, Victor ventured into Python programming by taking free Coursera courses whenever they were available, eventually enrolling in U-M’s Python for Everybody specialization program with the aim of applying to the Master of Applied Data Science (MADS) program at the U-M School of Information. Though Victor suffered another loss in his family while completing the specialization course, he again persisted, completed his application to MADS, and earned admission to the master’s program.

Now at UM-Ann Arbor, Victor has continued to pursue additional opportunities to grow as a data scientist. He has earned two silver medals and one bronze medal in Kaggle competitions, in which participants compete to create the best models for solving specific problems or analyzing certain data sets. He is also working toward Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and MySQL 8.0 Database Developer certifications and completing C programming training. Victor’s professor remarks that “his rise from driven undergrad researcher to an expert in data science has been nothing short of remarkable.” Ultimately, Victor’s vision for his career is to pursue a PhD in data science and to become a principal data scientist at a major establishment.
