Xiwei Yang is a master’s student in information science at the University of Michigan, where he is focusing on user-centered agile development. His academic and professional journey has been driven by a passion for leveraging technology to address societal challenges, particularly those affecting underserved communities.
Xiwei’s interest in the intersection of technology and social impact began during his time at one of China’s top journalism schools, where he earned both his undergraduate and first master’s degrees. During his studies, Xiwei spent nearly three years conducting field research in remote, earthquake-affected regions of China. There, he explored how emergency broadcasting systems could be improved to better meet the needs of residents in disaster areas. His comprehensive report on the subject proposed significant enhancements to existing information systems, highlighting his ability to combine technical knowledge with a deep understanding of community needs.
In addition to his work in disaster response, Xiwei dedicated two years to rural poverty alleviation efforts in China. He and his team utilized digital technologies to boost the sales of agricultural products, which led to a significant increase in the average annual income of local farmers. These experiences solidified his belief in the power of technology as a tool for social good.
At U-M, Xiwei has continued to apply his expertise to real-world challenges. As part of a team at a startup company called Fleet Lab, he contributed to the design and development of a School Bus Driver Support App, a specialized navigation tool that enhances safety and efficiency in school transportation. After graduation, Xiwei is deeply committed to using his skills to serve digitally underserved communities. His vision is to create technology solutions that improve access to essential services, with a focus on fostering social change and enhancing the quality of life for marginalized groups.
CEW+ applauds Xiwei’s perseverance and names him an Irma M. Wyman Scholar.
